BIOGRAPHY

I obtained B.Sc. Agriculture degree with Second Class Upper Division Honours, from University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, in 1999. I completed M.Sc. degree in Environmental Management (with special focus on medicinal plants) in University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 2004 and Ph.D. degree in Marine Biology (with special focus on seaweeds) in Ocean University of China in 2007. I joined the Department of Crop Science, University of Ruhuna in 2002 as a Probationary Lecturer. After completion of post-graduate studies, I was promoted to the Grade of Senior Lecturer (Grade 11) in 2007. On merit, I was promoted to the Grade of Professor in Crop Science in 2012. My research interests lie primarily in the areas of assessing metal contamination of agricultural lands and their remediation, and the effects of heavy metals on growth and development of economically important higher plant and algae species. I also work on the development of agro-technological packages for economically important medicinal plant species. I have published more than 80 research publications which include books, book chapters, journal articles and conference/symposium papers in the field of Agriculture and allied sciences. I serve as the Co-editor of the Faculty journal (Tropical Agriculture Research and Extension) and as a member of editorial/reviewing panels in number of national and international journals.

My research interests lie primarily in the areas of assessing metal contamination of agricultural lands and their remediation, and the effects of heavy metals on growth and development of economically important higher plant and algae species. I also work on the development of agro-technological packages for economically important medicinal plant species.
