ABOUT

Professor Ranjith Senaratne possesses a PhD from the University of Agriculture in Vienna. He is a Senior Professor and holds the Chair of Crop Science at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, with over thirty five years of experience in university education. He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Chairman of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) in Sri Lanka,Chairman of the National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering (Ocean University of Sri Lanka) and Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission, with nearly twenty years of administrative experience in higher education. The University of Durham, UK conferred a doctoral degree ( honoris causa ) on him in recognition of his outstanding contribution to higher education and community development. He has published over 100 research papers and articles related to agriculture and higher education.

  • From the Canadian International Development Agency, Canada (Grant No. CIDA/87/24; Budget US $ 43,000.00) to study nitrogen fixation of and N-transfer from some legumes to the associated crop as affected by the level of nitrogen and potassium.

  • From the Board on Science and Technology for International Development (BOSTID) of National Academy of Sciences, USA (Grant No. BNF-LLK-2-88-82; Budget US $ 110,000.00) for studies on improved nitrogen fixation of cowpea, mungbean and groundnut intercropped with maize. This is an extremely competitive and coveted award from the National Academy of Sciences of USA, which is considered as one of the most prestigious scientific bodies in the world.

  • From the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna (Grant. No: 5932 DP Budget: US $ 15,000.00) for improvement of nitrogen fixation of mungbean.

  • From the GTZ in West Germany (Grant No. PN 87 2061. 7-32/88, Budget DM 38,000.00) for studies on identification of fast-growing tree species adaptable to different agro-ecological conditions in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

  • From NORAD for Rs. 1.3 million to carry out studies on "Rehabilitation of salt- effected soils in the Hambantota District."

  • From APN, Japan to carry out research on “Climate Change”

  • From the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine for “Development of cost- effective propagation techniques and nursery practices for some endangered and rare medicinal herbs”.

  • As the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, I was instrumental in securing several competitive grants with substantial funding from foreign institutions. They have contributed greatly to the postgraduate training of staff and capacity building of the University of Ruhuna and rebuilding of some tsunami-affected communities in the country. Here, I have taken the initiative and provided necessary leadership, encouragement and support to the staff of the university in formulating the project proposals while making a direct significant contribution to them. Some major grants secured are given below:

  • A 3-year collaborative project on “Environmental and Livelihood Restoration and Development in Tsunami-affected Coastal Areas of Sri Lanka” with the University of Guelph, University of Manitoba, University of Waterloo and Queens University of Canada with financial assistance from the CIDA, Canada in 2006 to the tune of Can. $ 2.5 million (nearly Rs. 250 million).

    A joint programme with the Bodo University of Norway entitled “Creating an Entrepreneurial University” with funding from the Norwegian University Federation (NUFU) in 2006 This project is tenable for a period of five years and includes, among other things, postgraduate training for the staff, curriculum development and staff exchange. A sum of NOK 3.2. million (nearly Rs. 50 million) is available for this project.

    Development of a virtual degree programme on “Development Management” jointly with the Agder University College in Norway and the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan. Funds to the tune of NOK 5.9 million (nearly Rs. 100 million) have been approved for this project from NUFU, Norway in 2006. This project, among other things, includes several postgraduate scholarships for the staff of this university for higher studies

  • Recipient of the award given by the Third World Academy Sciences in Rome to the Best Young Scientist in Biology in 1992 in Sri Lanka

  • Recipient of “Ruhunu Puthra” award in 2000 in appreciation and recognition of the services rendered for the regional and national development.

PROFILE

Prof. Ranjith Senaratne possesses around 35 years of experience in higher education ranging from teaching, research and administration to community service. He has provided strategic, inspirational and operational leadership to higher educational institutions, and he is considered as a visionary leader and institution builder.

 

Born on 21 July 1954 in Galle, Ranjith Senaratne received his primary education at the Dickwella Methodist College and secondary education at Rahula College, Matara. He read for his B.Sc. in Agriculture and M.Phil. in Agricultural Biology at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka from 1973 - 1980. After joining the University of Ruhuna in 1981, he proceeded to the Agricultural University in Vienna for his doctoral studies from 1982-1986, researching nitrogen carry-over effects of legumes in sequential cropping systems using nuclear techniques.

 

He was appointed the Professor of Crop Science of the University of Ruhuna in 1998 and he has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna for a period of nearly eight years before being appointed the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna in March 2001. He has held the post of Vice-Chancellor for a period of six years from March 2001 to March 2007 with distinction. As the Vice Chancellor, he has been strongly committed to promoting academic excellence, high impact research, creative enterprise, strategic partnership with industry, community development and international cooperation. Under his visionary leadership and mature guidance, the University of Ruhuna has made great strides in the academic, research and outreach sphere, emerging as a leader of higher education in Sri Lanka.

 

Upon return to Sri Lanka in 1986, he pursued research in the field of nutrient cycling in multiple cropping systems, nutrient dynamics in agro-forestry systems and restoration of degraded land. He has over 100 publications to his credit. In 1992, he was adjudged the most outstanding young scientist in Biology in Sri Lanka by the Third World Academy of Sciences in Rome, Italy. Prof. Senaratne has been the recipient of several internationally competitive and prestigious research grants including a grant from the Board on Science and Technology for International Development (BOSTID) of the National Research Council of the USA and has held a number of coveted fellowships including the Andre Mayer Fellowship of the FAO and the Marie Curie Fellowship of the European community.

 

He was appointed Professor of Crop Science at the University of Ruhuna in 1998 and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna for nearly eight years before being appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna in March 2001, a post which he held with distinction for six years from March 2001 to March 2007. As Vice Chancellor, he was strongly committed to promoting academic excellence, high impact research, creative enterprise, strategic partnership with industry, community development and international cooperation. Under his visionary leadership and mature guidance, the University of Ruhuna made great strides in the academic, research and outreach spheres, to emerge as a leader of higher education in Sri Lanka.

 

Prof. Senaratne has been the President of the Agriculture & Forestry Section of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science and the co-editor of “Tropical Agricultural Research and Extension” Journal. He has served as a member of a multitude of professional bodies and national committees in an advisory capacity and has also been a member of Consultative Committee of the International Water Management Institute and the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce. As Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Directors of the universities in Sri Lanka in 2006, he initiated the CVCD Encouragement Awards Scheme with a view to promoting academic excellence and high impact research in Sri Lankan universities.

 

In recognition of his outstanding contribution in education, science, community development and international cooperation, the University of Durham in the UK conferred an honorary Doctorate on him in 2007. He served as the Chairman of the Ocean University (National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering) and Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission.
